LAKE BUNYONYI- “the amusement of Africa’s Switzerland”
Also known as a “Lake of little birds” lake Bunyonyi is located in southwestern region of Uganda in districts of Kabala and Kisoro, this is the world most romantic Lake. Its depth is expected to be between 44m to 90m making it the 2nd deepest lake in Africa, it stands at 1962m above sea level, and it’s a small lake covering an area of 61 square kilometers with the width of 7km and length of 25km. Lake Bunyonyi is surrounded by hills raising at 2,200m to 2470m above sea level, and is composed of 29 island with the famous punishment islands.
The lake is believed to have been formed due lava flow which merged from Virunga Mountains that occupied river Ndengo, it continued and blocked river Marko and resulted into a created dam. It is thought that the lake was formed 8000 million years ago, the lake stretches south wards touching north of Rwanda through steep hills contours that separates Kabala and Kisoro.
